managingABSENCE supports employees who are off sick, supports managers who
have to manage the employee absence and supports the company or organisation in an
attempt to improve services and profitability by increasing attendance.
There are over 30 reasons why employees are unable to attend work, but only one of these is
medical. Employee absence is a major issue for all companies and organisations. The loss of a
key employee is devastating to a small business. Being able to reduce employee absence by 1% in
a large organisation impacts significantly on profitability and future success.
Managing employee absence is challenging for all managers and for some particularly daunting.
With new disability legislation, issues of confidentiality and individual freedom laws, managers
often feel bewildered and unsure of which questions they can ask, how they can support
employees and how far an issue is confidential or appropriate to the employer.
managingABSENCE allows the employee to call a local number, seven days a week, 365 days of
the year, to report their absence. The same day they are contacted by a managingABSENCE
Occupational Health Nurse to discuss their particular issue and to provide advice and support
on how the issue can be resolved, for example, whether they should attend their General
Practitioner or immediately go to their local Accident & Emergency Department, or request
medication from their Pharmacist.
The Occupational Health Nurse agrees with the employee a convenient time to call back to
monitor the employee's progress and when the issue is resolved, the Occupational Health Nurse
is able to conduct a return to work interview to ensure that the employee is fit and able to
return to work.
At each stage of the process, the employer's line manager is provided with a detailed, confidential
report by email. This can be then transferred to the employee's personnel file. In addition, the
line manager and senior managers within the employing organisation are able to access the webbased
data in a fully secure manner to review employee absence trends, specific employee's cases
and further data specific to their company or organisation, providing patterns of absence, absence
rates and the Bradford scales for particular employees.
